Watermarks communicate
A watermark changes what the reader sees. It can identify a draft, discourage redistribution or show that a copy is confidential.
Anyone who can open the file can still see the document, so the watermark does not determine who gets access.
Passwords restrict opening
Password protection encrypts the PDF so compatible readers require a password before displaying its contents. The strength of that protection depends on the encryption method and the quality of the password.
A password should be shared through an appropriate separate channel when possible instead of being sent in the same message as the protected attachment.
Use both when their roles are needed
A confidential file can be password-protected for access control and watermarked to communicate handling expectations after it is opened. The two controls solve different problems.
Neither replaces organizational policy, recipient verification or secure storage for highly sensitive information.
Choose controls for a specific sharing situation
Suppose you send a draft to one reviewer. You may want the unopened attachment protected and the visible pages labelled DRAFT. Apply the watermark first, inspect it, then protect that reviewed copy. The password and label address different stages of use.
Neither control gives Pageivo an expiry, recipient account, access log or remote revocation feature. Once a recipient opens the file, they can reproduce its visible content. If you need access that can later be removed, use an approved managed-sharing service.

Keep claims proportional to the control
Do not describe a watermarked file as encrypted, or an encrypted attachment as impossible to copy. Verify the recipient and the exact file before sharing.
- Decide whether you need a status label, opening protection, or both.
- Watermark a working copy and review legibility.
- Encrypt the reviewed final copy with a unique strong password.
- Test a fresh opening and deliver the password through an appropriate separate channel.
