Use a password to control opening the file
Pageivo Protect PDF creates an encrypted copy using AES-256 and a password required for opening it. The operation runs in your browser. Pageivo does not offer a password-recovery service, so retain both the password and an appropriate backup of the original.
An opening password and PDF permissions are different things. Pageivo currently allows printing and form filling in its encryption settings. This tool should not be described as a system that makes copying, screenshots or redistribution impossible after a recipient opens the file.
Choose a password for the actual document
Use a unique, long password generated by your password manager where possible. The interface accepts six or more characters, but that input minimum is not a security recommendation. Avoid names, birthdays, predictable patterns and passwords reused for accounts.
The public Lab example uses Pageivo-Lab-Only-2026 so anyone can open the reference file. That password protects no private information and must not be reused for your own document.
Practice with the public sample
- Download metadata-source.pdf from the example below, or choose Try a sample inside Protect PDF.
- Enter a temporary test password in Password. The sample loader does not prefill a password.
- Choose Protect PDF and download the -protected.pdf result.
- Close the PDF preview and reopen the downloaded file in a compatible reader. It should ask for the password.
- Try a wrong password, then the correct one. The correct password should open the expected one-page sample.
Check the encrypted copy before sharing
The downloadable Lab reference was checked with an independent PDF reader engine: opening without a password was rejected, and the published sample password opened the one-page result. This checks the reference file, not every document or reader.
For your file, confirm the page count, page appearance and any required form behaviour after opening the encrypted copy. Some viewers remember a password within the current session, so a preview that remains open is not a reliable test of a fresh opening. Use a fresh reader session if necessary.
Send the password separately and finish editing first
Finish merging, page selection, numbering and any other necessary edits before applying password protection. Other Pageivo tools may reject encrypted input; protecting the file last avoids repeatedly decrypting working copies.
Use a separate communication channel for the password when practical, and verify the intended recipient. If the recipient has an approved secure-upload process, use the method they require. The encrypted attachment's filename remains visible outside the document, so choose it with care.
Understand the limits before relying on protection
