Why Is My PDF File So Large?

Images usually dominate large PDFs
High-resolution scans and photographs can contribute megabytes per page. A 30-page scan created at unnecessary resolution can therefore become much larger than a 200-page text document exported from a word processor.
Image compression, color depth and resolution all affect the final size.
Other objects also matter
Embedded fonts, attachments, duplicate resources, complex vector drawings and saved incremental revisions can also increase size. Some PDFs contain multiple versions of content because of the way they were edited or signed.
A simple browser compressor that rasterizes pages treats many of those structures as rendered output rather than preserving them individually.
Smaller is not always better
Reducing file size can trade away image detail, selectable text, accessibility or editability. The right target is the smallest file that still meets the document's purpose.
Measure success by whether the recipient can open, read and use the document—not by achieving an arbitrary minimum number of kilobytes.
