How to Remove Common PDF Metadata Before Sharing
Clear standard author, title, subject, keyword and software fields while understanding the limits of metadata cleanup.
What common PDF metadata contains
PDF document information can include title, author, subject, keywords, creator software, producer software and creation or modification dates. Those values may reveal a person's name, an internal project title or the application used to create the file.
Metadata is separate from the visible page content, which is why it can be overlooked during an ordinary visual review.
Metadata removal is not complete anonymization
A PDF can still contain names in visible text, comments, embedded files, form fields, filenames, images or other structures. Clearing standard information fields reduces one category of disclosure but does not guarantee anonymity.
For sensitive release workflows, inspect the entire document and use specialized sanitization or redaction procedures appropriate to the risk.
Review the cleaned copy
Create a new output file rather than overwriting the source, then inspect its document properties in a PDF reader. Confirm that the common fields you intended to remove are blank or reset.
Keep the original privately if you need its full metadata for records or authorship history.
Use the related Pageivo tool
